Retired Teachers Already in Action
The Alliance/AFT, Local 2260, held a brunch for retirees on April 24. Nobody
has to tell these retired teachers how important politics is, and nobody has
to tell them how to get things done. These highly educated and highly motivated
educators are part of one of the most effective political groups anywhere in
Texas.

Vice President Maureen Peters (standing) talked with teacher
retirees
Organizer Judy Bryant asked for, and received, signatures from
several petitions for legislation favorable to educators. One of the principal
programs is to win Social Security benefits, but the school district workers
are active on all levels. For the May 10 local elections in Dallas, they decided
to take no position on the school district's bond proposal, but they endorsed
two school board candidates: Adam Medrano and Carla Ranger.
Bryant invited Texas Alliance for Retired Americans Secretary
Gene Lantz to talk about national and state organizations for retirees. As soon
as the retirees found out about the July 12 convention in Austin, they began
signing up to go. Judy Bryant said that they would work with other retiree groups
to get busloads.
