The Texas AFL-CIO held its convention in Corpus Christi August 1-4. Becky Moeller, one of the best friends that the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans, ever had, was elected President. TARA Treasurer Elaine Jones provided photographs and news from the convention.
As you could probably tell from the banner
in the photo, the theme this year was "Building Power From Within."
AFT has had a push the last five years or so for
"internal
organizing." That was the emphasis at the convention. Getting the members
you already have to become activists. That way the union will have more impact
on society and those activists will also more readily recruit new members.
In the general sessions: It was pointed out that one-third of all voters are retirees. Union leaders were asked to get their retirees more involved. Someone pointed out (without giving any exact data) that more and more retirees were having to get jobs after retirement in order to survive.
TARA President Vic Pauly (center in the
photo) was sworn in as a Vice President. The convention passed a solid
resolution in support of retirees.
