All of the United Auto Workers retiree organizations in North Texas are represented at the monthly Council meeting on the 4th Tuesday at 10 AM at UAW 276 hall. All UAW retirees are invited to sit in. At the June, 2006, meeting, the main topic was getting all Texas UAW retirees registered to vote.
Region 5 of the UAW had provided a list of members who were not registered. Council President Mary Holomek divided the list by counties and sought help from other activists. As is often the case, the files were seriously in need of updating. In Dallas County, for example, 266 UAW retirees were listed as not registered. Almost 90 of them, as it turned out, were registered. Almost all of the others who could be reached by telephone were glad to have registration cards sent to them.
These early efforts to beef up retiree voting power are expected to pay off heavily in November!
