Texas Seniors Must Beware of Solicitations
Seniors probably get more junk mail than anybody, and a considerable lot of
it may be misleading. On May 13, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, our greatest
friend in Congress, warned about someone falsely using her name in their solicitations:
CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON WARNS DALLAS SENIORS OF MISLEADING SOLICITATION
LETTERS
Washington, D.C. - (May 13, 2008) Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson today
announced that she has sent a letter to the Senior Citizens League asking the
organization to remove her name from a mailing that has confused some constituents
of Texas's 30th District. The "Petition Approval Form" mailings say
that Social Security beneficiaries born between 1917 and 1921 (termed "notch
babies") who believe they are not receiving fair Social Security benefits
can contribute money to the Senior Citizens League in an effort to change the
law. Some mailings mention Congresswoman Johnson and suggest that she supports
these solicitations. However, Congresswoman Johnson is in no way connected to
the Senior Citizens League, nor does she approve of their fundraising tactics.
"I have nothing to do with the Senior Citizens League or with their mailings,"
Congresswoman Johnson said. "I encourage my constituents to research the
Senior Citizens League thoroughly before they contribute any money to the organization.
Furthermore, everyone is welcome to contact me about legislation and other federal
issues that concern them, without cost and without the need for a middleman."
