On the day after Christmas, the Employees Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) ruled that it is OK for companies to cancel their promises on health care for retirees 65 and over. This is another in a long series of anti-retiree assaults coming from big business and their hirelings in government. Texas seniors need to respond! Please send your views on this outrageous new development to your local newspersons. Letters should be short. They should make reference to the news announcement of the EEOC ruling. Include your phone number, as they nearly always check by phone before publishing anything.
People listen to us when we speak up.
Today's news articles about our pensions and benefits always gloss over the fact that our benefits are ours. We worked for them back when we were producing their hourly profit streams all our lives. Newspersons like to say that companies "can't afford" to pay us the benefits they agreed to, but that is just another way of saying it is OK to steal.
In the immediate case, the EEOC ruled that there is no violation of Age Discrimination laws when companies cancel health care coverage for employees who qualify for Medicare. In the New York Times version, there are several quotes from government and business leaders who agree. Unfortunately, there is also a quote showing that an underling at the AFL-CIO "saw merit" in the ruling. Undoubtedly, his words were twisted, or there is a misprint, or he has made a mistake that may well cost him his job! The most important thing that Texas seniors can learn from recent developments is that big business will go on robbing us until we get together and fight them.
