Briefly, by way of introduction, the national organization
(Alliance for Retired Americans) claims 4-million retired union members and
400,000 members of community groups. About 81,000 Texans are already members
in the newly formed (May 20, 2006)Texas chapter.
STATEMENT:
Texas Alliance for Retired Americans would like to add its voice to this issue.
Even though we do not endorse political candidates or parties, we do speak
up on behalf of, and in support of, issues affecting our members, workers
and their families, the poor, and the elderly.
The Texas Alliance of Retired Americans heartily supports and endorses Petition
32874 calling for a moratorium on utility disconnections for the summer.
We are witnessing a particularly savage summer coupled with unprecedented
huge cooling bills. We are concerned that, if left unchecked, the private-for-profit
utility companies will work tremendous hardships on Texasâ ™ elderly,
poor, retirees on fixed and limited incomes, and workers and their families.
Failure of the Texas Public Utilities Commission to act promptly and positively
in this matter would be a signal to all Texans that the private-for-profit
utility companies control the process rather than the people for whom the
commission was originally created to protect.
