Older Americans Act Reauthorized!

Congratulations to all! Some of our efforts paid off! What a significant accomplishment. It would not have happened without the voices of active, energized older Americans.

As a member of the board of directors of the Alliance for Retired Americans, and Vice-President of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans, and at-large delegate to the WHCOA, I am particularly gratified to see all the effort that Texas seniors put into this extremely important cause.

We with the Alliance are concerned with the current administration's plans to attempt to rejuvenate Social Security privatization early next year. My clear recollection of the WHCOA was that we overwhelmingly opposed this assault on Social Security. As you know, that was not made clear in the "official" report just released by the WHCOA.

So, I suppose, one could say a major battle has been won but the war rages on.

Currently the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans (TARA) is working at local grassroots level to encourage and enable seniors to vote-by-mail to insure that their votes count and that there is a paper trail. We also are encouraging the candidates for federal offices to hold town hall meetings on the Medicare Plan D debacle and Social Security privatization.

Following the elections we will be working to educate, organize and mobilize seniors on these issues as well as building local chapters across Texas. Our aim is not to replace any existing organization or group, but, rather to become a unifying resource for all groups seeking to influence governance and policies affecting older Americans, retirees, and soon to be retirees (and quite honestly our kids and grandkids).
