Health Care Grows in Importance

The Texas AFL-CIO, in convention August 1-4 in Corpus Christi, passed a resolution favoring single-payer universal health care similar to House Resolution 676, which is also known as the Conyers Bill and has supporters all over the nation. The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans had passed a similar resolution, and various progressive organizations in Texas have been considering the same move.

A model resolution is available on this web site.

The Movie "Sicko," a documentary by Michael Moore, has attracted a great deal of attention. Moore's point is that insurance companies are draining the American health care system and that a universal, single-payer system would be much better. The National Nurses Organizing Committee has established drives in all the major Texas cities. They strongly support national health care and other reforms.

John Glantz (pictured at right) and his family started a web site in North Texas: www.protesthealthcare.org. They called a rally which took place at Dallas City Hall on August 5. Gene Lantz, Secretary of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans (TARA) was one of the speakers. Further activities are being planned.
