The Texas Agriculture Department is launching a program in late early June, 2006, to encourage the nation's retirees to come to Texas. Bob Moos of the Dallas Morning News reported that Texas is already the 6th favorite state in attracting retiree settlement. Because of lower living costs, some retirees are even leaving the most popular states such as Florida.
The
Agriculture Department will be lining up city campaigns to attract retirees.
They hope that each city will pay an application fee to fund the state program.
They will open a retiree web site and start sending delegates to retiree conventions
to promote Texas.
Texas is already a leading destination for "Snowbirds," but permanent settlement is also on the rise.
A consultant is quoted as saying that each retiree household spends an average of $36,000 a year and pays an average of $3,000 in state and local taxes. Such a "clean industry" is a big addition to any community. Texas is a wonderful place to hang up one's spurs.
Hopefully, the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans will also encourage retirees to put their spurs on again!
