Tyler Retirees' Chapter Holds Regular Meetings

We just had our second full membership meeting and will now have monthly meetings at 9:00 a.m., the third Saturday of each month at the Smith Country Central Labor Council Building, 1509 W. Erwin, Tyler, Texas. Consider this an open and standing invitation if you're in the neighborhood. Our next meeting is July 19.

1. Please find attached a couple of pictures: Signing up two new members before the meeting, and some of the members at the meeting.
2. And another invitation: Please take a moment to visit my new blog and leave your comments: http://psst-progressivesavvyseniorstexas.blogspot.com/

And the update of the meeting:
Update from the East Texas Chapter - Texas Alliance for Retired Americans
The meeting was called to order by John Nash, President, Smith County Central Labor Council at 9:00 a.m.
Shane Fox introduced four new members from community-based groups. Then all members introduced themselves and spoke briefly of their interests and concerns.
President Nash said that the Labor Council would make its facilities available for future meetings.
After discussion, we agreed that the third Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM would be our "official" meeting time and that our goal would be to build the group with "activists" rather than building a head count.

Shane said that as the group's "organizer" he would be available on short notice to come and talk to community groups, faith-based groups, veteran's organizations or union retirees.

President Nash cautioned the new members, and reminded the old members, that we need to stay alert to the fact that we are part of a 501-3c organization and that we will not endorse candidates, or parties, and that all political views are welcome, but that we would be speaking out on the issues of concern to seniors.

After group discussion, we decided we had enough members and volunteers to properly staff a table at the annual Smith County Labor Day picnic. Shane agreed to help get, or develop, sign-up slips and promotional material.

We also agreed we need to develop a sign to go in the labor council's window to announce our presence. Shane said he would work on that and have it before our next meeting

After discussion, we agreed that as membership grows, future business would include development of by-laws, fund-raising or dues, election of officers, and appointment of committees.

We agreed our next meeting would be on July 19 and we would finalize our planning for the Labor Day picnic then.
