UAW Retirees Discuss Issues

The North Texas United Auto Workers (UAW) Area Council meet on August 22, 2006 at Local 276 in Grand Prairie. Seven locals were represented. Chairperson Mary Holomek said that the UAW Summer school had been "the best Summer School in many years." Retirees donated a considerable amount of money during the two weeks of the school July 23-August 1.

Holomek reviewed the ongoing work on making sure all Texas UAW members are registered to vote. There was a lot of discussion on the original information that comes from the UAW International. Electronic forms instead of paper were suggested. The next big topic was plans for Labor Day and the elections beyond. There was a suggestion that the North Texas retirees try to host at least one big all-union luncheon with some of the major candidates for office. Another suggestion was that North Texans try to get a target date to go and help other labor-endorsed candidates outside our area.

All locals were encouraged to affiliate with the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans. They are already part of the national group.
