On June 12, retirees at United Aerospace Workers Local 848 passed a resolution calling on every union member to work on registering and motivating voters during this important political year. They were disappointed at cancellation of their plans to take a bus to a retiree convention in Austin, but continued making their own plans to make sure that retiree issues are prominent in all election activities.
Longtime
retiree activist Gene Cates made a motion that the local host the experts
from the Dallas County Elections Department at the July 10 second-Thursday luncheon.
Election experts can explain all of the ins and outs of voter registration in
Texas in just a few minutes. Then, they can swear in deputy registrars, who
can then be more flexible in planning and running voter registration drives.
Deputy registrars can register voters on the spot. They give a receipt to the new voter. The receipt itself is proof of registration and can be used at the polls, even if, for some reason the new voter has not actually received his or her registration document in the mail. This is faster and more effective than using the usual mail-in registration cards. Having both kinds of cards on registration drives improves our work.
Most retirees now realize how politics is taking away pensions, Social Security, and health care. They are moved to take action, and voter registration is 100% appropriate through the first of October!
