National Newspaper Calls Retiree Benefits "Monster!"

Fred Milholland of Hurst displays the offensive headline

The lead headline on the nationwide newspaper, USA Today, for May 25, 2006, referred to retiree benefits as a "monster." The article goes on to compile gross statistics as to the total amount of retiree benefits owed. Instead of the blessing they are, the newspaper calls them a "burden!"

What do we do with monsters?

When American workers' benefits, for which we work throughout our lives, are termed "monster" by a major media outlet, the signal is clear. Retiree benefits are to be attacked and destroyed, just like any other "monster!"

As it happens, United Auto Workers retiree leaders were training in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, on the day that the offensive article ran. UAW Region 5 Retiree Coordinator David Minnis said that anti-union organizations such as the National Right to Work Committee are responsible for organizing the attack against retirement benefits. He added that unions are hoping to pass progressive legislation, called the "free choice" act, that would make it slightly less difficult for Americans to organize themselves in their workplaces.
