On his blog at http://psst-progressivesavvyseniorstexas.blogspot.com/, Shane Fox of Tyler lays out the problem with utility bills and the reason that older Texans are suffering in the heat wave. Fox is a Vice President of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans and an expert at community organizing.
He points out that Dallas County alone has already reported five suspected deaths from the current heat-wave. Many medical experts believe that such deaths are under-reported by as much as 54%, especially among older people, as reported by the Biomedical Market Newsletter.
He asks that retirees attend hearings in Houston with State Representative Sylvester Turner, who called on the Texas Public Utility Commission to hold an emergency session in order to adopt Summer Heat Disconnection Rules including stricter standards for disconnections due to defaulted payments.
Nobody can be counted on to take care of retirees. We have to stand up for ourselves! It's a matter of life and death!
