Texas Retiree Leaders Meet June 2 in Austin

The Executive Board of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans met in Austin on June 2. Our guests were Teresa Perez-Wiseley, Sandra Taylor, and Diana Sepeda. Perez-Wiseley, a recent retiree, offered her expertise in a number of valuable areas. The other two guests were active members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, which seeks support in the fight for patient protection in Texas hospitals. The Board agreed wholeheartedly to work with them on the broad and ongoing fight for health care reform.

President Victor Pauly guided the group through a number of minor changes in our operating structure. He has begun creating an operations manual. Vice-President Shane Fox made a motion, received unanimously, to approve the work and continue building the manual as we go along. Brother Fox also reported on developments at the national level.

The retiree organization's presence at the Texas AFL-CIO convention, August 2-4 in Corpus Christi, was enthusiastically discussed. President Pauly said we will definitely have a meeting room during the convention. We discussed plans for an even larger presence so that all Texas unionists will be able to help with retirees.

The Board also agreed to combine our 2007 convention into the 2008 one. The importance of the 2008 elections is underscored by the fact that the National Alliance for Retired Americans plans to kick off seniors' early participation in September, 2007.

It is critical that our seniors' organization continue building our strength through individual and group affiliations, and through increasing our data base of contact information with all Texas activists and retirees.
